Netflix’s dog-eat-dog survival competition show Outlast season 1 put contestant Javier Colón in a very stressful situation facing two thick as thieves friends Jill Ashlock and Amber Asay looking to ransack his gear and camp. The 42-year-old bohemian bicycle-riding nomad tried to play a clean game. But in a game with little real rules of engagement, he was at a severe disadvantage. It didn’t help that he was an annoying know-it-all, too. So what happened to Javier after shooting his flare and leaving Alaska’s Neka River.
It’s been eighteen months since Javier’s frightening ordeal competing for a million-dollar prize, and the Ohio native continues to globetrot due to his insatiable wanderlust. Javier became an avid traveler after nearly dying after being hit by a reckless drunk driver back in 2010. Javier needed surgery to save his two crushed legs. The near-death experience led him to create his travel website and Instagram account called Hungry Guy on a Bicycle.

Shortly after the show aired, Javier was still working in San Francisco, California, where he made a kegerator while working a job. After quitting his job, Javier packed up his bike, sold some of his stuff on Facebook marketplace and hit the open road in his truck, heading to see family in Texas. He drove through Nevada and at one point on his road trip he hit an unmarked speed bump, breaking his truck’s bed. He had full coverage and only had to pay a $100 deductible, the rest of the over $6,000 in damages.
After visiting family in Texas, Javier spent the spring and summer of 2022 riding his bike all along the Gulf Coast, starting in Texas and camping all along the coast chilling on beaches having beer with friends. Javier made it all the way to Cancun, Mexico, where he flew back to Houston. He lost over 22 pounds on this bike trip and traveled over 2,200 miles.
He roved around Europe throughout the fall of 2022, visiting Germany, Netherlands, and Belgium. After downing delectable food and guzzling a bunch of beer from local breweries, while sightseeing the stunning European architecture, Javier flew to Abu Dhabi, where he checked out some mosques.
Javier then spent and extended period of time in Thailand. “I just spent three months in Chiang Mai for physical therapy. It takes me at least two months of intense Thai massage to realign my hips and back. I love Thailand,” he told his followers in his Instagram comments.
While in South East Asia, he visited Laos and Vietnam, too.

The huge foodie made up for his spartan diet on Outlast. Over the course of his traveling in the past year-and-a-half, Javier ate quail, pigeon, breakfast tacos, Mexican grilled corn cob, crawfish, crabs, tamal, oysters, shrimp empanadas, grasshoppers, pickled herring, jumbo pretzel, various cheese, chicken sausage, mussels (despite eating a bajillion in Alaska), Pâté, snail (escargot), Guay Jub, durian, fermented fish paste, duck blood salad, grilled rattan worms, fried squid cake,
Through the last year of travel, Javier visited ancient Mayan temples, drank a ton of beer at Oktoberfest, danced at Mexico’s carnival, killed a bug that got in his ear, swam in a mangrove oasis, cycled the canals of Amsterdam, freeing a bird for good luck, floating on a tube in a water cave, rode a scooter along the countryside in Vietnam,
He also hung out with a giant seal, saved a turtle, sunbathed with an crocodile, slept next to pigs, chilled with beach cows, fed a giraffe a banana, goofed around with a monkey, observed some elephants,
Outlast‘s Javier Is Now Traveling in Japan, As Well As Trashing Amber & Jill
After Vietnam, Javier flew to Tokyo, Japan, where he’s trying out sushi, ramen, local spam, scallops, raw salmon, crab-fried rice and more. He also stayed in a capsule hotel, and gave a demonstration of a Japanese bidet toilet.
The glutton for travel, beer and all kinds of food is about to call it quits. Javier is heading back to the United States to start a new job back home.
While on the tail end of his travel, Javier left a bunch of comments saying Jill and Amber were worse than shown on TV. He also contemplated how far he could’ve thrown Amber after a fan suggested he should’ve thrown her in the Neka River. “It definitely went through my mind… I’m 6ft 225lbs… I could have thrown her a good 7 feet.”
Fans are anticipating Netflix releasing an Outlast reunion episode where the cast can hopefully sort things out.
