Below Deck Mediterranean alumnus Joao Franco is making a comeback as a reality TV star after joining the Below Deck Down Under season 2 crew midway through filming the charter season in Cairns, Australia in spring of 2022. Joao finished filming Below Deck Mediterranean season 4 in southern France in October 2018. The half-Portuguese Zimbabwean and his family moved from Zimbabwe, where he lived until his late twenties, to Durban, South Africa. But a lot of major life developments took place for Joao in the five years since Below Deck Med season 4. Here’s what happened to Joao after Below Deck Med and since filming BDDU season 2.
Joao lapped up his fame a bit, spending some time in the USA after filming Below Deck Med. On the Behind The Velvet Rope podcast, the Below Deck Med season 4 bosun said he visited America to see what minor celebrity life was like. The show isn’t well-known back home in Africa, or in Europe where he works. He also told the podcast host how he had to deal with a ton of blowback on social media from the show. His love triangle with stewardesses Brooke Laughton and Kasey Cohen in season 3, along with his overall arrogant manner, left a bad taste in some fans’ mouths.
Joao improved on his character and behavior in season 4 as the bosun. However, he faced major controversy for slut-shaming BDDU‘s Chief Stewardess Aesha Scott (then second stew on Below Deck Med season 4) for her choice of risque outfits, language and dance moves. After Aesha called him out for it, Jaoa quit drinking the rest of the season. Overall. Captain Sandy Yawn was pleased with his leadership. The BDDU season 2 previews show Aesha isn’t thrilled to be working with Joao again on superyacht Northern Sun, however.
What Happened To Joao After Below Deck Med Season 4
Yachtie Joao found himself in some trouble with the law shortly after filming season 4. He was out partying in West Palm Beach, Florida, with fellow Below Deck alumni Ross Inia. An extremely intoxicated Ross started a fight with a police officer. At one point Joao was handcuffed by police, but ultimately he wasn’t charged with anything. A belligerent Ross wasn’t so lucky, and is one of 12 Below Deck cast members arrested, mug shot taken and charged.
“We’re on a reality TV show between us all. Below Deck Mediterranean and Below Deck [original]. You guys are going to look…” Joao said to the cops after he and Ross were arrested at a bar. Despite Joao not getting charged, it likely didn’t help his chances getting the call up to be on following Below Deck Med seasons.
Joao dated Brooke after season 3, but they broke up after he allegedly found out she cheated on him. He was apparently single on season 4, but a few months before filming season 4 he met Michelle Dicu, a dental hygienist who helped him get his teeth whitened while he was in NYC for the season 3 reunion. The two eventually got engaged, but the pandemic, and Joao’s yachtie jobs far away from his fiancée led to them drifting apart in their long-distance relationship. By the summer of 2021, three years after meeting in 2018, Joao announced he and Michelle broke off the engagement.
Joao Became A Superyacht Captain After Time On Below Deck Med
Joao met his current girlfriend Domi Tiesi, a fellow yachtie who also works on the superyacht he captains, in June 2022, months after filming BDDU season 2. However, things may be awkward for him in his current relationship after BDDU season 2 finishes airing. The previews for the latter half of the season appear to show Joao kissing stewardess Margot Sisson. It looks like she abandons her puppy dog crush, deckhand Harry van Vliet. Joao appears to have met
Joao became a captain about four years ago, shortly after he stopped starring in Below Deck Med. On BDDU season 2 he worked the role of second officer.
“Very grateful for everything and everyone; old friends and family, new friends and family… truly had one of the best years so far and I cannot wait for next year’s adventures! Starting off with a skiing trip, a new captain job on an awesome brand new 43 meter super yacht, getting my master’s license and a few other sneaky surprises,” Joao said in an Instagram post at the end of 2022. He now works on a gorgeous Pershing motor superyacht as the captain.
It looks like Joao is gunning for a job as a captain on Below Deck one day.
He’s recently sailed his superyacht in Corsica, France. He and his crew also worked Croatia in the Mediterranean. However, before his most recent job, he worked on other superyachts in the Caribbean, too. Joao still loves to return home, too, visiting Zimbabwe and South Africa semifrequent. Joao’s quite close with his mom and the rest of his family.
He also likes to visit the animal reserves back home to see the lions, elephants, hippos, hyenas and other African animals.
