Blown Away season 4‘s Jonathan Capps endeared himself to Netflix viewers because of his passion for glassblowing and doing his best for his young daughter back home. The 40-year-old dad even brought a picture his daughter drew him to remind himself of why he was competing on the show for the $100,000 grand prize, as well as the residency in Italy. Right out of the gate he hit a homerun, wining the first competition and the prize from the Glass Art Society of $3,000 and a trip to Berlin, Germany to the society’s next conference.

“Jonathan Capps, I actually met years ago when he was first starting in glass. He’s really become a great artist in his own right,” resident evaluator/judge Katherine Gray.

Jonathan’s first piece was very personal to him, because it expressed his transformation from an aspiring professional baseball player to becoming a glassblower. He changed professions after had a career-ending shoulder injury, which his artwork expresses with his bat crushing and breaking a baseball, with the innards of the ball sticking out in beautiful blue glass.

“The inspiration for my art typically comes from experiences that shape my life. Whether hiking the Appalachian Trail, coaching Little League Baseball, becoming an Archaeological Illustrator halfway around the world, or competing on Blown Away, I channel those experiences into ideas and fully embrace life as a part of my art!” Jonathan explained on his website. Jonathan’s glass artwork portfolio shows he loves making containers that have a birch look to them, hence why he suggested making birch trees when collaborating with co-star Morgan Peterson. However, he also specializes in making fancy Fabergé eggs and Finnish American Art Glass.

Jonathan was a glassblowing instructor at Ohio State University and previously studied in Finland, and previously taught at the Cleveland Institute of Art. He’s also a freelance glass artist and designer.

Jonathan Capps grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he loved camping, playing basketball, and hiking. He also honed his craft at many different schools, including “Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, The Pittsburgh Glass Center, Corning Museum of Glass, Penland School of Crafts, and an International Artist Residency at Lasikompannia in Nuutajärvi, Finland.” He believes this has allowed him to develop “a diverse practice that fluently moves between traditional techniques and experimental methods, pushing the boundaries and seeking new applications of the glass medium.”
