Awkward dork Zack Goytowski didn’t start off on the best foot with viewers when he picked mean girl Irina Solomonova in the pods over kind-hearted Bliss Poureetezadi. However, Zack righted wrongs by proposing to Bliss after his disastrous romantic getaway at the Mexico resort. In his day job, Zack tries to right wrongs, too, as a criminal defense attorney. On the show, Zack talks about starting his own law firm in Seattle, and now we have more details about his criminal defense lawyer job from him answering a Q&A. Here’s what we know about Zack’s law firm and job as a criminal defense lawyer.

Awkward Zack got grilled by fans for his poor decision picking Irina over Bliss, which he explained. Now fans are starting to warm up to him more because he and Bliss actually look very cute together. On Instagram, Zack condudcted a Q&A answering fan’s questions about his job as a lawyer.
“I am a criminal defense lawyer. And I specialize specifically in litigation. What that means is I negotiate your case, and I make sure that your side of the story gets told. And sometimes that means we have to go in front of a jury, and I have to tell your side of the story, and cross-examine witnesses who are testifying against you,” Zack said when asked about his job.
Zack currently works at the law firm of Kottkamp, Yedinak & Esworthy based in Wenatchee, Washington. However, Zack’s law firm of his own focusing on personal injury is still an ambition for the not-too-distant future.
“I am at a bit of a turning point in my legal career. I’ve done just about everything I wanted to do in criminal defense, and I’m always going to continue to do a little bit of criminal defense here and there, because I love being able to fight for people who are in some of the worst points in their lives, and just being able to give people hope, when things are going wrong,” said Zack.
“But where I want to be in five years, I would like to be working on complex personal injury litigation, specifically wrongful death cases. It’s something that hits pretty hard with my mother and the way she died. And honestly the way it all happened, my family and I, we really didn’t have time to think about the litigation side.”
Zack’s Message to Prospective Clients & Law Students
“It’s my willingness to go to trial and make sure my client’s side of the story is told, that I’m able to get the best outcomes for my clients. I really believe that every lawyer in criminal defense has to be willing to go to trial on any case if their client wants to, and that’s my general philosophy,” Zack said about helping his clients the best outcome possible.
He also had advice for aspiring lawyers.
“I think that if you are applying for law school, the first thing you should do is ask yourself why. And if it has anything to do with money do not apply to law school. Because it’s going to cost a lot of money and it’s going to take a lot of time. And there’s a lot easier ways to make money. With that said, if you really, really believe strongly in fighting for justice then I would absolutely encourage you to apply for law school,” he said.
“And, honestly, it doesn’t really matter what law school you go to. Everybody’s got take the same bar. So go to the school that you feel is going to be the best fit for you.”
Zack also defended his job, explaining why it’s so important lawyers defend alleged criminals.
“What I do is hold the government accountable to proving that a crime has been committed before they’re allowed to take somebody’s life, liberty or property away… And I believe it is the bedrock of democracy. So regardless of what someone is accused of, we have to have every person protected by the right to due process.”
